Crowd Controladded 8th April 2009
When he became a pastor, David Chawner - SCORE's Rugby Union Chaplaincy Coordinator & London Wasps Chaplain - never thought caring for the flock would involve shepherding supporters in & out of a sports stadium. But that's exactly what he was doing last Sunday when he became a steward for the day at the London Wasps v Newcastle game.
"I've got to know many of the stewards through my links with them on match days," said David. "When one of them suggested I spent a day working with them, I jumped at the chance. It was an opportunity to gain a better understanding of them & their work." And he was working with experts as the stewarding team at Wasps home ground, Adams Park, won several prestigious awards last year for their work; essential to the running of any sporting event, yet so often unnoticed. So how did it go & what did he learn? "Thankfully I didn't have to eject anyone! Apart from getting to know individuals better, it showed me that stewarding is a mixture of customer service, security & crowd safety. The operation to get 9,000 people & 1,000 cars along a single road without mishap in well under an hour was especially impressive. Being part of it brings the satisfaction of a job well done." Additionally David used the day as a sponsored event to raise over £1,500 towards funding for his role in SCORE. Though if the funding fails, could a new career in stewarding be on the horizon?
