There is growing momentum around chaplaincy provision within Rugby Union. Over 50% of the professional clubs in the UK now have SCORE chaplains and several other are actively pursuing the idea. Chaplaincy provision has also been an official part of the IRB U19 World Championship in Belfast in 2007 and the Junior World Championship in Wales in 2008.

To maintain this momentum and ensure the highest possible standard of chaplaincy, SCORE appointed Dave Chawner as full-time Coordinator for Rugby Union Chaplaincy. His role involves

• placing chaplains in clubs
• supporting those already in post
• organising chaplaincy for major rugby union tournaments
• developing relationships with the governing bodies
• promoting chaplaincy at every level of the game

Dave Chawner, who is also chaplain to London Wasps, commenced working for SCORE in February 2007, and since then has seen significant developments in the work.

The aim is to grow this UK-wide network of pastoral and spiritual support so that it becomes integral to the game at every level.

To fund this role SCORE needs to raise £60,000 per year.
